Lost Lighthouses of the Hudson River
Over the decades, more than a dozen lighthouses have been destroyed by ice, dismantled, or otherwise rendered obsolete. No lighthouse structures other than the seven current lighthouses remain on the Hudson River, although many former houses have been replaced with modern "skeleton" lights on poles and permanent scaffolding.
To determine this list of "lost" lighthouses was not easy, but research with the National Archives and Records Administration as well as newspapers of the time period have helped us track down even the most obscure of the lighthouses. The following list has been compiled using that research. This list starts in New York City and moves north, in geographical order (to the best of our knowledge), and includes all known lighthouses, lights, and beacons on the Hudson River, including extant lighthouses. Some of these lighthouses are little more than a name in a newspaper article. Others we have extensive records and histories for.
